ENERGY/LITIGATION ASSOCIATE

Spiegel & McDiarmid LLP seeks an attorney with 3-5 years energy experience for its litigation/regulatory, and transactional practices representing states, local governments, municipalities, and cooperatively owned electric and natural gas utilities.  Ideal candidates will have superb writing skills, excellent academic credentials, intellectual inquisitiveness and a desire to use their legal talents to advance the public interest. TEAM ADMINISTRATIVE LEGAL ASSISTANT

Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversee and coordinate attorney and attorney-related case work and office management.
  • Assist with preparation of briefs, RFP’s and other filing deadlines.
  • Proofread, edit and format briefs, memoranda and other legal documents as needed.
  • Maintain and organize case files.
  • Identify, analyze and assemble documents relevant to case issue.
  • Respond to special research requests and provide updated information on current cases.
  • Assist with administrative items including time entry and expense reports.
  • Coordinate attorney travel arrangements.
  • Prepare presentations and materials for speeches.
  • Provide initial or back-up coverage to attorneys.
  • Serve as back-up receptionist as needed.
  • Coordinate special events for clients.
  • Prepare materials for internal administrative meetings.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

High school diploma required. Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred. 50+ wpm typing. Litigation law firm experience a plus. MS Office 2010 and advanced Word skills required. Must have excellent organizational, communication and grammar skills. Strong service orientation required. Must be able to work well under deadlines with minimum supervision.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER

Responsible for overseeing Human Resources day-to-day operations related to staffing, recruitment, benefits, compensation, policies and procedures.

  • Manage day-to-day operations of support staff.
  • Supervise support staff; coordinate staffing/coverage/assignments.
  • Manage recruiting/employment activities for all non-legal positions.
  • Collaborate with Recruiting Partner on legal recruitment of summer associates, associates, and paralegals.
  • Coordinate Summer program.
  • Counsel and advise employees.
  • Complete employment Verifications, Bar Affidavits, References, I-9 E-Verify process, etc.
  • Implement all benefits, policies and procedures and general administration of the retirement plan.  Assist Executive Director in annual review and renewal of firm benefits package.
  • Assist the Executive Director in maintaining insurance package policy renewals including general liability, workers compensation and professional liability insurance.
  • Implement annual performance evaluations for staff employees.
  • Maintain job descriptions, policy and procedures manual and performance evaluation procedures.
  • Maintain Human Resources Information System/Database.
  • Conduct employee orientation and exit processes. Ensure the firm’s compliance with federal, state and local employment laws and EEO requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned - Accounting (payroll backup/ timesheets/ benefits processing); Coordination of paralegal assignment; Assisting with Social Event Planning and Catering; etc.

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 5 years of direct human resources experience including management-level experience in recruitment, benefits administration, and other personnel areas in legal or professional services firm.

Ability to proactively and collaboratively work with attorneys, management and staff.

Strong communication skills needed, both written and verbal.

Knowledge of  FLMA, ADA, FLSA, and general employment laws. Member of  SHRM-CP or PHR a plus. Proficient with all Microsoft Office Suite products, with strong Excel skills.
