Spiegel & McDiarmid has experience representing
municipalities, cooperative utilities, public agencies
and other clients in all segments of the natural gas
industry, including local distribution, interstate and
intrastate gas pipelines, gas storage, and industrial
gas usage.
We provide regulatory and transactional counseling
related to all aspects of natural gas, including the
unique issues presented by liquid natural gas (LNG).
Changing regulatory treatment and challenging
siting issues are presenting significant legal issues
for LNG, an energy source which is expected to play
an increasingly important role in the U.S. and World
energy markets in the coming decades.
Several of our attorneys have Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission (FERC)/Federal Power
Commission work experience, which provides insight
from both internal and external perspectives. Our
attorneys deal with issues such as:
- Restructuring; supply contracting; tariff filings; rate
cases; price manipulation; and transaction reporting
- Enforcement actions; rulemakings; open access; and
cost allocations
- Certificate applications for terminals and pipelines;
contracts for gas supply and transportation; and
mergers and antitrust
We frequently counsel clients on the regulatory
implications of commercial transactions. While our
regulatory experience is critical to the successful
structuring of gas purchase, sales and service contracts,
our strong litigation reputation enhances our clients’
bargaining power.
We play a leading role
in helping intervenors
protect their rights
before FERC and
in responding to
regulatory change.
We have substantial
experience in
proceedings involving
bypass and in pipeline
and distributor stranded
cost cases before
regulatory agencies
and civil courts.
